Trainer

Several teams made changes to their coaching staff during the summer break.

Despite the current contract with Steve Walker, the EC KAC hired the Finn Petri Matikainen as the new head coach, who had previously worked for the Pelicans . Matikainen had previously been in the seasons 1997/98 and 1998/99 completed 76 games for the KAC and also in 2013/14 to gather at the Graz 99ers EBEL experience as coach after being there during the current season, Mario Richer had replaced .

The Vienna Capitals reacted by signing Dave Cameron to the departure of Serge Aubin , who had switched to the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League . Cameron had previously been the head and assistant coach of several NHL clubs for many years , most recently the Calgary Flames .

The EC VSV signed Gerhard Unterluggauer, a native of Villach, who played for his home club for many years and ended his active professional career there in 2016. After two years as assistant and later head coach of the DEL2 team in Heilbronner Falken , he returned to the EC VSV at the end of January 2018, where he took on a double function as trainer and sports director.

At KHL Medveščak Zagreb, Aaron Fox initially took over as coach from Douglas Bradley in summer 2018 . After the club ran into financial difficulties at the end of November, Fox resigned on December 10, 2018. For him, Danijel Kolombo , who at that time had already been on the bears' coaching staff for more than a decade and had recently looked after the organization's second team and the youth teams , among other things.

Shortly before the playoffs, two other teams replaced their coaches: EC Red Bull Salzburg ( Andreas Brucker for Greg Poss ) and HC Bozen ( Clayton Beddoes for the previous season's master coach , Kai Suikkanen ).

mode

As in previous seasons, the mode remained unchanged. There will be a main round with a double round trip and a total of 44 games. The six best-placed clubs are automatically qualified for the playoffs and play in a pick round in a simple round-trip round for their opponent's right to vote for the quarter-finals. The six worst-placed teams play in parallel for the two remaining playoff spots. In both groups bonus points are awarded according to the placement in the main round. This is followed by playoffs with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Season preparation

As in previous seasons, the Champions Hockey League was the most important tournament in preparation for the season this year . The reigning champions HCB Südtirol Alperia , runner-up EC Red Bull Salzburg , and the winner of the main round, the Vienna Capitals, are qualified for this.

Basic round

Main round

The Vienna Capitals started the new season with a twelve-game winning streak and initially sat confidently at the top of the table. After the first defeat, a 2: 7 in Klagenfurt, a short series of negative results followed before the team's performance stabilized again. In return, one of the favorites, EC Red Bull Salzburg, got off to an unexpectedly weak start, but was able to improve gradually, with the team also making it to the semi-finals of the Champions Hockey League . The reigning champions from Bolzano asserted themselves in the front half of the table and benefited in particular from the strong performances of first goalkeeper Leland Irving and the first line of attack around Brett Findlay , Daniel Catenacci and Michael Blunden .

The Graz 99ers got off to a much better start than expected and meanwhile occupied first place in the table, although Robin Rahm, the designated first goalkeeper, only played his first game on October 30th due to an injury (he was replaced by Linus Lundin in the meantime). The EC KAC also established itself among the top teams, which the team owed in particular to a secure defense around the Norwegian national goalkeeper Lars Haugen and the newcomer Nick Petersen .

The Black Wings from Linz, who have been consistently successful over the last few seasons, had big problems at the start of the season, whereby coach Troy Ward was also criticized, but were able to work their way up the table until halfway through the regular season.

In the lower half of the table, several teams had to struggle with some poor defensive performances. In particular, HC Innsbruck, which had an outstanding offensive, could hardly improve here, with the goalkeeper next to René Swette being changed twice : Luka Gračnar replaced Janne Juvonen , who in turn had been the successor to short-term goalkeeper Matt Climie . Fehérvár AV19 also had difficulties in the goalkeeping area, as MacMillan Carruth could not convince after the strong previous season and the team did not have a backup suitable for the league .

The Bulldogs from Dornbirn and HC Orli Znojmo alternated good and bad games, although the Czechs managed to break away from their pursuers a little thanks to a strong phase at the end of November.

The EC VSV, where an icon of the club, Gerhard Unterluggauer, took over the coaching position, slipped down to last place after a decent start to the season and quickly lost contact due to long series of defeats. With Corey Trivino , one of the designated key players was also dismissed, although the team as a whole was rarely able to keep a game open and at the same time brought up the rear in the fair play rating. This resulted in a major restructuring at the club's management level around Christmas time. Managing director Ulf Wallisch and his team resigned and a new board took over the management of the association.

At the end of November it became known that the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb was struggling with financial problems. As the club announced to the league, a sponsor had failed and had not made promised funds available. The board then released the players from their contracts and gave them the freedom to look for new clubs. Among others, Ivan Šijan , Antonin Manavian , Mario Puskarich , Nikolai Lemtjugow , Sébastien Sylvestre and Mike Aviani left the team in the following days . On December 10th, the coaching team around Aaron Fox followed . The EBEL announced in a press release on December 12th that the other clubs had decided to suspend the current transfer regulations with the remaining player swaps in order to enable the Croatians to sign up local players and continue playing.

Placement round

There were few surprises in the placement round and the order of the teams changed little compared to the main round. With eight wins from ten games and a gap of seven points (nine without bonus points), the Vienna Capitals were able to secure first place and thus the first quarter-final pick. In addition, the Graz 99ers had a positive balance to show. In particular, HC Bozen fell significantly, which ultimately resulted in the dismissal of coach Kai Suikkanen immediately before the start of the playoff.

Qualifying round

Shortly before the end of the main round, it was announced that KHL Medveščak Zagreb would no longer take part in the qualifying round. The bonus points from the main round remained unaffected, but one team remained free of play in each round. HC Orli Znojmo and EHC Linz were able to qualify confidently for the playoffs, although HC Innsbruck and EC VSV initially had a mathematical chance of participating in the quarter-finals.

Quarter finals

Vienna Capitals - HC Orli Znojmo

The series of the Capitals against HC Orli Znojmo made the obviously bad relationship between the Czech club and the league clear. Several times before, the people of Znojmo had accused the referees of partiality. Head coach Miroslav Fryčer was even suspended for four games during the regular season after throwing a water bottle on the ice due to his dissatisfaction with the referee's decisions. The allegations reached a new climax in the third encounter in the playoff series, when Fryčer tried to contact the league's director of hockey operations , Lyle Seitz, on his mobile phone to complain about the game management. Before the last game there was another gross unsportsmanlike behavior: in the referee's locker room was a plastic box full of carrots with the note "For better eyesight, HC Orli Znojmo." while the Capitals found two trophies in their cabin with the inscription "Boys from Vienna, don't worry. We will make you champions. Your loyal referees" and "World champions 2019 in simulating, Vienna Capitals" . The Capitals proved to be the better team from a sporting point of view and were able to win the series after a confident 7-0 opening win with 4-1 wins.
