Chris VandeVelde (born March 15, 1987 in Moorhead , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .
Career
Chris VandeVelde began his career as a hockey player with the Lincoln Stars, for which he was active from 2004 to 2006 in the junior league United States Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the fourth round as a total of 97th player by the Edmonton Oilers . First, however, he attended the University of North Dakota from 2006 to 2010 , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . With his university team he won the Broadmoor Trophy in 2010 . He was also elected to the WCHA's All-Academic Team.
Towards the end of the 2009/10 season , VandeVelde made his professional ice hockey debut for Edmonton's then farm team Springfield Falcons when he prepared a goal in two games in the American Hockey League . Since 2010 he has played regularly for Edmonton's new AHL farm team Oklahoma City Barons , while in his first two professional years he played 17 games in the National Hockey League for Edmonton.
In December 2013, the Barons gave him to the Adirondack Phantoms , the then farm team of the Philadelphia Flyers , so that VandeVelde continued to alternate between the AHL and NHL. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , however, he established himself in the Flyers NHL squad, to which he belonged without reservation until the summer of 2017. After his expiring contract was not extended by the Flyers, he accepted a trial offer from the Ottawa Senators in September . However, this did not result in a permanent commitment, whereupon the striker remained without a contract until the end of November and then joined Rauman Lukko from the Finnish Liiga .
For the 2018/19 season he signed a contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .
