Tatranský pohár
The Tatranský pohár ( German Tatra Pokal , English Tatra Cup ) is an ice hockey tournament that has been held in the High Tatras since 1929 . This makes the Tatra Cup the second oldest cup competition in Europe after the Spengler Cup .
The first event took place in Starý Smokovec in 1929 . While an international and a national tournament were played annually in the 1930s, only two tournaments took place between 1952 and 1968 due to organizational problems, both of which were won by Sparta Praha Sokolovo . Then the tournament got more attention in western countries, so that in 1969 the Cologne EC took part in the tournament. A year later, the IF Surahammars joined a Swedish club for the first time. In addition, the SC Riessersee took part in the tournament.
With the construction of a covered ice rink in Poprad in the mid-1970s, the external conditions for the tournament improved. In 1979, the anniversary year of the tournament, Dynamo Weisswasser, a club from the GDR, took part.
Nowadays the competition is held annually in the summer in Zimný štadión Poprad as a preparatory tournament, in which mainly teams from Slovakia take part.
