The Engelmann ice hockey club ( EKE for short ) was an Austrian ice hockey club from the federal capital Vienna , which was created by changing its name from the Pötzleinsdorfer Sportklub (PSK) founded in 1922 . The EKE existed from 1932 to 1957.

history

Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Club

The Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Klub (PSK) was founded in 1922 and was soon playing in the top Viennese league, in which the Austrian ice hockey champions were played. It was closely connected to the Engelmann artificial ice rink and was therefore sent by post at Sportplatz Engelmann, Vienna, Jörgerstr. 24, resident. On November 21, 1932, the general assembly of the Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Club in the rooms of the Engelmann artificial ice rink decided to rename the club the Engelmann ice hockey club.

Austrian ice hockey championship

In its first ice hockey season in 1922/23, the Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Klub is listed among the teams taking part in the championship. Further results are not known. In 1923/24 the Austrian ice hockey championship was held in two groups. The PSK reached second place in the 1st group. In the decisive game for the championship against the WEV on February 24, 1924, the game had to be extended twice before the WEV can score the winning goal. In the 1924/25 season, the championship had to be canceled due to bad weather. Since the WEV has played most of the games, there is no Austrian champion for this season and therefore no placement for the Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Club. The second PSK team also took part in the championship games. In the 1925/26 season, the PSK entered again with a first and second team. It was only played in one class in the championship according to the “Vienna System”. The PSK resigned with the first team after a few games from participating in the championship. Despite this resignation, the PSK was able to compete in the first class again in the 1926/27 season and reached third place behind the clubs WEV I and WEV II. The PSK II was first in the first group of the second class. Since other clubs joined the ice hockey association, in 1927/28 a 1st class and a 1st class reserve and a 2nd class were played with two groups. The first team of the PSK was second behind the WEV and the second team also reached second place in the reserve championship of the first class behind the WEV II. In 1928/29 another change in the division of classes was made by the ice hockey association. There was a 1st class with 6 clubs, a 2nd class with groups A, B and C and a reserve championship with groups A and B. The PSK continued to suffer from the trauma of not being able to win the championship against the WEV . In 1st class, PSK I came second behind WEV I, in reserve group A, PSK II came second behind WEV II and in group B of reserve PSK III came second behind WEV III.

Due to the ever new clubs in the ice hockey association, the first class had to be divided into groups A and B in the 1929/30 season. The 2nd class received two groups and also the reserve. The Pötzleinsdorfer SK was placed in group B of 1st class and the WEV in the A group. Both teams achieved first place in their group. In the play-off between the two teams on February 19, 1930, WEV won 2-0 and were Austrian champions. In the 1930/31 season, the groups in the Austrian championship remain as in the previous year. The WEV is again group winner A, group winner B is the WAC and behind that the PSK I is second.

Before the 1931/32 season there was again a change in the division, according to which the first two teams of the two groups in the 1st class must complete a final round. In the first group the WEV and HC Währing qualified for the final round, the PSK and the WAC in the second group. In the game on January 29, 1932 on Engelmann-Platz, the championship between the Pötzleinsdorfer Sport Club and the Vienna Ice Skating Club was decided. The PSK wins 2: 1 in front of 5000 spectators and becomes Austrian ice hockey champions for the first time.

Engelmann ice hockey club

The Engelmann ice hockey club (EKE) was created on November 21, 1932 by renaming from the Pötzleinsdorfer sports club. Two players - Hans Tatzer and Hans Schneider - from the EKE took part in the Vienna Ice Skating Association (WEV) trip to South Africa from May 18 to August 2, 1937 for the opening of the Ice Palace in Johannesburg . During the opening, a total of eight games were played against South Africa, South African national teams and local clubs.

In 1936 the EKE won the Vienna championship and thus qualified for the final against the provincial champions for the state championship. Since the Klagenfurt Athletic Sports Club did not play for this game, the EKE was declared state champion.

In the 1937/38 season, the EKE played together with the WEV, Wiener AC and EK Brigittenau in the league of the Austrian ice hockey association for the Viennese championship and achieved first place, the WEV came second. Both teams thus played in the state league together with the KAC and the German Sports Club Leoben for the Austrian state championship title in 1938. Here, the Engelmann ice hockey club won ahead of the Klagenfurt Athletic Sports Club. The championship decision was made on March 1, 1938 in the game EK Engelmann - Wiener EV, when the EKE defeated the WEV 3-2 with goals from Tatzer, Voit and Zehetmayer and thus became Austrian national champion in 1938.

By the annexation of Austria in March 1938, no Austrian championships were possible. In the German ice hockey championship in 1938/39 , the EKE was assigned to group A as the Austrian ice hockey champion and the KAC to group B. Teams like the Berlin Ice Skating Club, Rastenburger SV, ESV Füssen and LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin played against the EKE. EKE and Berlin Ice Skating Club reached the semi-finals with 6: 2 tied points. There they defeated their opponents and reached the final. In front of 8,000 spectators, the Engelmann ice hockey club defeated the Berlin ice skating club 1-0 with a goal by Hans Schneider 17 seconds before the end of the game.

In 1939 the sports sections of the WEV and the Eissport Klub Engelmann merged for economic reasons to form a starting community - the Wiener Eissport-Gemeinschaft (WEG) - which won the German championship in 1940.

After the Second World War, the association moved from the destroyed Engelmann-Platz to the WEV facility. EK Engelmann also celebrated its successes on the new pitch and won the first post-war championship of the 1945/46 season.

In 1948, the Vienna Ice Skating Club and EK Engelmann founded the Vienna Ice Sports Association for synergetic reasons - they both played on the same pitch . Until its dissolution in 1951, the Vienna EG celebrated three times in a row winning the Austrian championship title in 1949, 1950 and 1951. After the dissolution of the Vienna EG, EK Engelmann returned to the championship as an independent club, which it won again in 1956 and 1957. In 1957 the association was finally dissolved for economic reasons.
