Jacob Wesley "Jake" Smith (born May 1, 1995 in Oakville , Ontario ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with HC Gherdëina in the Alps Hockey League since June 2019 .

Career

Jake Smith began his youth career in his hometown with the Oakville Rangers in a lower class junior league in the Canadian province of Ontario . At the OHL Priority Selection 2011 he was selected in the ninth round at a total of 169th position by the Brampton Battalion from the top junior league Ontario Hockey League . But he spent the 2011/12 season in the Orangeville Flyers jersey with play in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . Then the Italian-Canadian joined the Brampton Battalion, where he initially acted as a substitute goalkeeper. After relocating the team for the 2013/14 season , which henceforth traded under the name North Bay Battalion , Smith established himself as a regular player. The greatest success with the team was in 2013/14 reaching the OHL finals, in which the team was subject to the Guelph Storm .

In the summer of 2016, Smith, who was scheduled as a backup goalkeeper, signed a one-year contract with HC Bozen with play in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga . In the 2017/18 season he won the EBEL championship with the South Tyroleans. Smith also played the 2018/19 season with Bolzano. On June 7, 2019, it was announced that Smith would move to HC Gherdëina in the Alps Hockey League .

International

During the 2017/18 season, Smith played for the Italian national team for the first time . In total, he completed three games for the Azure .
