The 2019/20 season was the fifth edition of the highest competition for club teams in European ice hockey . The competition was held with a reduced field of participants, whereby all 32 participants had to qualify in terms of sport. The title was secured for the fourth time by Frölunda HC Göteborg from Svenska Hockeyligan , who defeated Mountfield Hradec Králové from the Czech extra league 3-1 in the final .

The group stage matches were scheduled between August 29 and October 16, 2019. The games of the knockout phase began on November 12, 2019 and ended with the final game on February 4, 2020.

Card of the participants of the CHL 2019/20

mode

The 32 teams start in a group stage with eight groups of four clubs each. The teams play one home and one away game against each group opponent.

The two best teams in each group qualify for the round of 16. This as well as the following rounds are played in the knockout process as a return leg. The final will be played in one game.

Attendees

32 clubs take part in the CHL, 24 from the six so-called founding leagues, eight via wild cards that the CHL awards to the champions of the so-called challenger leagues. The wild card intended for the winner of the IIHF Continental Cup will be awarded to the Second Belfast Giants this season , as the Continental Cup winner HK Arlan Kökschetau, as a club from Asia, cannot participate in the CHL.

Founding and challenge leagues

For the first time since the introduction of the league ranking, the number of starting places per league changed. The Swiss National League gains a place that the Finnish Liiga has to give up.

Founding Leagues: Challenger Leagues:
* Supranational ice hockey league with one participant each from Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic

The starting places for the founding leagues are assigned in the following order:

  • Defending champion
  • master
  • The remaining places will be allocated according to the placements in the main round

Deviating from this, the Austrian EBEL assigns its starting places as follows:

  • master
  • Winner round
  • Winner Pick-Round
  • Second pick round
  • defeated finalist

The challenger leagues are represented by the national champions. In the case of the British EIHL, this corresponds to the winner of the main round.
