Rungsted is a district of the municipality of Hørsholm on Øresund north of Copenhagen in Denmark . The center of Hørsholm is two kilometers west of Rungsted. The postal district and the railway station are called Rungsted Kyst (German: Rungsted coast). The marina of Rungsted (Danish: Rungsted Havn) is located on the coast of Øresund .

history

Rungsted Kro, 1839

The name Rungsted was first mentioned in 1346 in the form Runæstigh . The name is probably derived from the old Danish word runi , which means pig and sti (= rose) results in pigsty, later changed to sted . Another source derives the first part of the place name from the small waves that are characteristic of the Øresund.

Rungsted Kro (German: Rungsteds Gasthof) was first mentioned at the beginning of the 16th century, but is probably much older. The inn was on Strandweg, the main route between Copenhagen and Helsingør, right in the middle of the route. As long as the Königsweg could be used by normal travelers, it was an ideal place to dine, stay overnight and feed the horses. In 1803 the inn moved to a building on the other side of the Strandweg and the old Rungsted Kro was renamed Rungstedlund , now the seat of the Karen Blixen Museum . In the middle of the 19th century, the middle class from Copenhagen began to go to the beaches of Øresund for beach holidays in summer and Rungsted Kro was transformed into a bathing hotel. In contrast to the fishermen, you could offer rooms with a view of the water and a balcony.

Culture

The poet Johannes Ewald lived in Rungsted Kro from March 1773 to autumn 1775. Here he had his most productive time and wrote e.g. B. Rungsteds Lyksaligheder - En Ode (German: Rungsteds Glückseligkeit - an ode). Johannes Ewald was buried on Trinitatis Kirkegård in Copenhagen. Two hills in the area around Rungsted are named after Johannes Ewald, one is the old Bronze Age hill in Rungstedlunds Park and the hill that is located on Rungstedweg near the harbor. From the top there is an excellent view of Øresund and the port of Rungsted. There is constant discussion about which of the two heights is the right Ewald hill. But in Ewald's time it was Rungstedlund, this is where the Kro stood and therefore it is most likely that the poet preferred the height in Rungstedlunds Park. When Karen Blixen returned to Denmark from Africa in 1931 , she moved to Rungstedlund, which her father Wilhelm Dinesen had acquired in 1879. She lived here until her death in 1962.

Marina

The Rungsted Havn marina has space for around 800 boats. Some of the yachts of the members of the Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub (KDY) with headquarters in Copenhagen are also located here. There are also many restaurants here, including the MASH chain's steakhouse and Sticks'n'Sushi

Sports

The area around Rungsted has many sports facilities and venues, and the Rungsted Ishockey ice hockey club is located in Rungsted Skøjtehal.
