Adolph Wilhelm Dinesen (born December 19, 1845 in Copenhagen , † March 28, 1895 there ) was a Danish officer and writer.

Life

Dinesen came from a Jutland family of officers, landlords and officials. His father was Adolph Wilhelm Dinesen , his mother Dagmar Alvilda Dinesen, née von Haffner (1818–1874).

At the age of 18, he was the youngest lieutenant in Denmark to take part in the German-Danish War . He later wrote the book Fra 8th Brigade about his experiences . As a Danish soldier he fought in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 and was involved in the suppression of the Paris Commune in May 1871 . He also put down his experiences from this time in writing in the book Paris under Communen , published in 1873 .

In 1873 he retired from the Danish Army and in August 1873 traveled to Wisconsin in the USA . There he lived until December 1874 in the community of the indigenous people of the Chippewa . After successfully integrating into the ethnic group, he became a father here for the first time. But before the birth of this daughter, he returned to Denmark. He supported his sick father in agriculture. After his death he left his homeland again to fight on the Turkish side in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 .

After his return from Turkey, he bought the Rungstedlund country estate in 1879 to manage it. In 1881 he married Ingeborg Westenholz, with whom he had five children, including the writer Karen Blixen and the officer and author Thomas Dinesen . During his time as a squire, he was also politically active. After several unsuccessful candidacies, he became a member of the Folketing in 1892 . Dinesen was a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Dinesen wrote numerous books, some very critical of political issues, but also about hunting. For the latter, he used his Indian name Boganis as a pseudonym .

Wilhelm Dinesen hanged himself in 1895 after being diagnosed with syphilis . For his then ten-year-old daughter Karen, who was very close to her father, his father's suicide was a severe blow. He is buried in Hørsholm Church, where he was a long-time member of the parish administration .
