The oldest parts of the house date from around 1680. The building served as an inn for a long time, Ludvig Holberg and Johannes Ewald lived as guests on Rungstedlund. Johannes Ewald lived very happily there from 1773 to 1775 and wrote some of his major works, including the poem Rungsteds Glückseligungen and the autobiography Life and Views . In 1803 the inn closed and was converted into a farm. In 1879 Karen Blixen's father bought the house with the lands. In 1898 the south and east wings burned down and were not rebuilt. The museum is located in the west wing of the building.
