The 2020/21 season is set to be the seventh edition of the highest competition for club teams in European ice hockey .

Due to the restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , the CHL Board postponed the start of the competition to October 6, 2020. The group phase will be canceled, the competition will be held as a knockout competition with a round trip. The final will be played in one game on February 9, 2021.

The 32 teams play in knockout rounds with a return leg. The final will be played in one game.

Attendees

32 clubs take part in the CHL: a total of 24 from the six so-called founding leagues , one each from the seven challenge leagues and the winner of the IIHF Continental Cup 2019/20 .

Participants per league

The six founding beds each provide three to five teams. The distribution is based on the CHL league ranking , which takes into account the results of the last four years. Compared to the previous season , the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) has one place more. For this the Czech extra league had to give up a place:

Founding Leagues: Challenger Leagues:
* The EBEL plays with one participant each from Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic

The starting places for the founding leagues are assigned in the following order:

  • Defending champion
  • master
  • The remaining places will be allocated according to the placements in the main round

Deviating from this, the Austrian EBEL assigns its starting places as follows:

  • Winner round
  • Winner pick-round, if identical to the winner of the regular round: Second pick-round
  • Master, if already qualified: Finalist, if already qualified: semi-finalist better qualified in the pick round

The challenger leagues are represented by the national champions. In the case of the British EIHL, this corresponds to the winner of the main round.

Overview of qualified clubs

Except for the Belarusian championship, all national championships in 2019/20 were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The starting places provided for the champions were allocated according to the placements in the main round. The Slovak representative HC 05 Banská Bystrica waived because their stadium will not be available in the 2020/21 season. The CHL Board therefore awarded a wild card to the runner-up in the Belarusian league, HK Nyoman Hrodna .
