GKS Tychy is a professional sports club from the Polish city ​​of Tychy . The operator is the city-owned company Tyski Sport SA , which is listed on the stock exchange. The sports club was created in 1971 from a merger between KS Polonia Tychy and some departments of KS Górnik Wesoła . After a few name changes since 2008, the abbreviation GKS stands for Górniczy Klub Sportowy (German mining sports club ) again - just like when it was founded .

The roots of the ice hockey department go back to 1956. It has been part of the GKS Tychy since it was founded in 1971 and is by far one of the most successful ice hockey teams in Poland. She was Polish champion in 2005, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020, nine times runner-up and eight times cup winner. In 2015 she won all the titles that Polish ice hockey teams could achieve at national level. In addition, she maintains her own women's team under the name Atomówki , which also plays first-class.

Soccer

The football department was founded in 1971 and after the expansion of the modernized stadium, after an interruption, the first men's team is currently playing in the first division , the second highest national league in Poland. The greatest success of the football department was reaching the Polish runner-up title in 1976.

Other sports

In addition to ice hockey and football, the sports club has increasingly devoted itself to other sports after the change in the political system in Poland in 1989. The own Futsal Department of GKS Tychy was founded in 1995 and is the youngest branch of the sports club. She plays in the highest Polish Futsal League since 2006. The basketball department was established in 1971, but was revived after a break in 1990. She has been playing in the second highest Polish basketball division since 2014.

Not part of the GKS Tychy , but partly financially and supported through various agreements, the Tychy-based American football club Tychy Falcons , which was founded in 2008 and competes in Poland's second-highest division.
