The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1987/88 season was the 23rd edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1987; the final was played in October 1988. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the tenth time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1986/87 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played for the first time with a preliminary round in four groups of four in a simple mode. The final was played in a group of four of the group winners of the preliminary round in the mode of everyone against everyone.

The qualification games were played on October 8 and 15, 1987 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and in the Scottish capital Edinburgh . Slavia Sofia and the Murrayfield Racers played a qualifier for the free place in group D in the first and second leg.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played from November 20-22, 1987 in four groups. The venues were Megève in France , Varese in Italy , Oslo in Norway and Rotterdam in the Netherlands . The winner of the qualification, the Murrayfield Racers from Great Britain , qualified to participate in group D.

Group A

The group A games were played in Megève , France . The games took place in the 2,700-seat Palais des Sports . Saint-Gervais-les-Bains , ten kilometers away, acted as a secondary venue . There was played in the Patinoire Municipale , which seats 1,700 people.

The final tournament was held from October 14th to 16th, 1988 in the Swiss climatic health resort of Davos . The games took place in the 7,000-seat ice rink .
