The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1986/87 season was the 22nd staging of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1986; the final was played in September 1987. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the ninth time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1985/86 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The final was played in a group of four in the mode everyone against everyone.

The qualifying games were played on October 2 and 9, 1986. Two teams played a qualifier for the first round.

1 round

The first round games were played on October 16 and 23, 1986. Eight teams played the four qualifiers for the second round.

1 The Mont-Blanc HC actually won the first leg 9-1. After HC Meran objected that Mont-Blanc should have used two Canadian players who were not eligible to play, the IIHF rated the game 5-0 for Meran.

2nd round

The second round games were played on November 13 and 20, 1986. The four winners of the first round as well as the four seeded participants - Tappara Tampere, HC Lugano, Polonia Bytom and EC Klagenfurter AC - played the four qualifiers for the third round. 3rd round

The second round games were played in February 1987. The four winners of the second round as well as the four seeded participants - Cologne EC, Färjestad BK Karlstad, TJ VSŽ Košice and the defending champion CSKA Moscow - played the four qualifiers for the final tournament. The final tournament was held from September 24th to 27th, 1987 in Porza , Switzerland . The games took place in the 8,700-seat Pista la Resega .
