The 2014-15 IIHF Continental Cup is the 18th edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament started on September 26th, 2014, the super final will take place from January 9th to 11th, 2015. A total of 16 teams from as many European countries take part in the 6 tournaments.

Mode changes

In the run-up to the 18th edition of the Continental Cup, the following changes to the mode were decided:

• The winner of the Continental Cup receives the right to start in the Champions Hockey League (CHL) for the following season
• No participant is automatically qualified for the final tournament (previously the defending champion and the host of the final tournament were directly qualified for this), i. H. all teams have to qualify for the super finals through qualifying tournaments of the various rounds
• Teams from the countries of the founding leagues of the CHL are not allowed to participate in the Continental Cup (Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, Austria)

The Fischtown Pinguins received an exception for the 2014/15 season, but if they win the cup they will not be able to compete in the CHL.

In October 2014 the HK Kompanjon-Naftohas Kiev withdrew from its right to start in the Continental Cup due to the crisis in Ukraine and the related financial problems. The ice hockey federation therefore changed the mode in such a way that the vacated starting place was filled with the more successful runner-up (points, goals) of groups B and C.

First round

The first round games took place from September 26th to September 28th, 2014 in Sofia ( Bulgaria ). Participants were CG Puigcerdà ( Spain ), HK ZSKA Sofia (Bulgaria), HK Beostar ( Serbia ) and İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi SK ( Turkey ).

The winner of the first round qualified for the second round. There he met the seven teams already seeded for the second round.

Second round

The second round of the Continental Cup was played in two groups from October 17 to 19, 2014. The venues were Bremerhaven in Germany (with host Fischtown Pinguins , the Belfast Giants ( United Kingdom ), Tilburg Trappers ( Netherlands ) and the qualifier from the first round HK CSKA Sofia ( Bulgaria )) and Brașov in Romania (with host ASC Corona 2010 Brașov , KH Sanok ( Poland ), Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák ( Hungary ) and HK Prizma Riga from Latvia ).

The first placed of the two groups reached the third round and met the teams seeded for the third round. As the best runner-up, the Belfast Giants replaced the team from the Ukrainian capital Kiev, which had been set for the third round and withdrew their participation for political and financial reasons.
