The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1972/73 season was the eighth edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in September 1972; the final was played in November 1973 and August 1974. A total of 16 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the fourth time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1971/72 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The defending champion CSKA Moscow and last year's finalist Brynäs IF Gävle from Sweden were seeded for the semifinals.
