The IIHF Continental Cup 2009/10 was the 13th edition of the competition held by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The tournament was held from September 25, 2009 to January 17, 2010. A total of 19 teams from 19 countries took part in the tournament. The Austrian club EC Red Bull Salzburg emerged as the winner of the final tournament.

Two finalists were set, the host Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble and the HK Junost Minsk from Belarus , as representatives of the highest placed countries according to the IIHF world rankings 2009, which have registered for the tournament. The two other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

Attendees

Due to the expansion of the field of participants in the Champions Hockey League for the 2009/10 season , only participants from those countries were initially planned that did not occupy the first seven places in the IIHF league rankings. The national associations of Russia, Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland and Slovakia were initially not entitled to register a team for the competition.

However, since the International Ice Hockey Federation announced at the end of April 2009 that the planned CHL expansion would probably not take place due to the financial crisis , the participation system was revised again in May. In addition to the teams already eligible to participate - either the champions, runners-up or another top club of the respective country, which is determined by the national association - the associations of the top 7 nations were also allowed to register a participant until May 18th. However, this was not allowed to participate in the Champions Hockey League. Each association was free to report a team as part of the Continental Cup.

Due to the complete cancellation of the Champions Hockey League in mid-June, some teams that actually started in the CHL also took part in the competition.

Group B

The decisive duel for group victory took place on the first day of the tournament, when the Dutch champions HYS The Hague beat hosts SC Miercurea Ciuc 4: 3. With safe victories over Újpesti TE Budapest and qualifiers FC Barcelona HG on the following days, they finally secured the ticket to participate in the third round. The hosts from Miercurea Ciuc had to be content with second place, while the Hungarians from Budapest ended up in third place. The Spanish champions, who clearly lost all games, proved to have no chance.

Overall, the six games played in the 4,000-seat Vákár Lajos Műjégpálya were attended by 4,600 spectators.

A total of 5,800 spectators attended the six tournament games over the three days.

Third round

Bully during the game HC Bozen against Sheffield Steelers

The third round of the Continental Cup took place from November 27 to 29, 2009. Was played in two groups in the Italian Bolzano and Latvian Liepaja . Group B winner HYS The Hague qualified to participate in Group D, while Group C winner KS Cracovia Krakow bought the ticket to participate in Group E.

Group D

As in the previous year, HC Bozen hosted one of the two third-round tournaments, but this time missed the jump to the Super Final . After the first two game days, the hosts and the Sheffield Steelers had emerged as favorites for the tournament with two wins each. The HDK Stavbar Maribor and the qualifier HYS The Hague played only a subordinate role and determined the group third on the last day of the tournament. Ultimately, the Dutch champions from the seat of government in The Hague secured the position with a 4-1 win over Maribor. In the last duel of the tournament, the Sheffield Steelers won against HC Bozen just 4: 3 in the penalty shootout . In doing so, they not only returned the favor for the narrow defeat that league rivals Coventry Blaze had to accept in the decisive duel last year, but also qualified for the final tournament in January.

A total of 14,050 spectators attended the six games, which corresponds to an average attendance of 2,341.7. The previous year's mark at the tournament in Bolzano was increased by more than 4,500 spectators.

Group E

Group E was less tight than in group D. There the EC Red Bull Salzburg celebrated reaching the Super Final after the second day of the tournament . After Salzburg and hosts Liepāja won their opening games against HK Sokol Kiev and KS Cracovia Krakau , the Austrians defeated their remaining rivals HK Liepājas Metalurgs 4: 3. On the same day, the qualifier from Krakow had the biggest surprise of the weekend with a win in the penalty shootout against Kiev. On the final day, the Ukrainians secured second place with a victory over the host team, while Salzburg finished the tournament unscathed with three wins.

A total of 3,339 spectators attended the six tournament games over the three days. This achieved an average of 556.5 spectators per game.

Super final

The Super Final of the Continental Cup took place from January 15th to 17th, 2010. The venue for the tournament was Grenoble, France . In addition to the already set representatives from France and Belarus, the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble and HK Junost Minsk , the Sheffield Steelers from Great Britain, as the winners of Group D, and the EC Red Bull Salzburg from Austria, as Group E winner, the remaining two places.

Already on the first match day the two qualifiers from Salzburg and Sheffield drew attention to themselves and won their opening games against the two seeded teams. The second day of the tournament started with the game of the two winners from the previous day, which the Austrians decided in their favor. The hosts from Grenoble needed a win in regular time in the second day's game in order to keep the possibility of winning the cup open on the last day. Since they only took two points away from the match by winning the penalty shootout , the first European Cup victory of an Austrian team since 1998 was clear before the last day. Thus the games on the final day only had statistical significance. HK Junost Minsk secured second place with a win over the Sheffield Steelers. The tournament winner, EC Red Bull Salzburg, underscored his dominance throughout the tournament with a 9: 4 win over the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble.

The six games in the 3,496-seat Pôle Sud attracted a total of 16,800 spectators. The host's three games were sold out.
