Marco Pewal (born September 17, 1978 in Villach ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player who was active in the Austrian ice hockey league at EC VSV and EC Red Bull Salzburg . He has been the head coach of the Austrian U20 national ice hockey team since September 2018 .

Career

At the age of 16, Pewal made his debut in the 1997/98 season at EC VSV in the highest Austrian league. Because of his stature at the time, his teammates called him chives . During this season he also played for the Telekom team in the national league .

In 2000 he moved to Zell am See for two years (with an interlude at DEK Klagenfurt) before returning to VSV in 2002. He has been playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg since 2005 , with whom he has won several Austrian championships . In addition, he achieved the best plus / minus balance in the league in the 2005/06 season . In 2010 he won the IIHF Continental Cup with the Salzburg team . From the 2011/12 season he played again for the EC VSV before ending his professional career after the 2014/15 season. Overall, he scored in 758 ÖEHL games and 231 goals and 339 assists. He was then employed as a junior coach at VSV and looked after the U18 team from the EBJL as an assistant coach. At the same time, he played in the amateur area for the fourth-class ESC Steindorf until 2019. He later looked after the U12 to U16 teams at VSV before he was appointed head coach of the Austrian U20 national ice hockey team in September 2018 . With this he managed to move up from the division to the top division at the 2020 U20 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship in December 2019.

International

In the junior division, Pewal played for Austria at the U18-C European Championship and the U20-C World Championship in 1997 .

For the men's selection , in which he made his debut on February 6, 2004 in the 2: 3 defeat after penalty shoot-out in the friendly against Italy in Villach , he was active at the World Championships of Division I in 2006 , 2008 and 2010 . After the promotions he achieved there, he played in the top division with the team from the Alpenland in 2007 and 2011 , while in 2009 his name was missing from the Austrian squad.

At the U20 World Cup in 2018 , he was assistant coach for the Austrian juniors who played in the A group of Division I.
