history

The Austrian U20 national ice hockey team was founded in 1979 . Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the World Championships, while the U19 national team took part in the Junior European Championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the Austrian U20 national team has exclusively represented the U20 junior level at world championships.

When they first took part in 1979, the Austrians took part in the first-ever B World Championship, where they finished fifth out of eight teams. As early as 1980, the team from the Alpine country was able to win the B world championship and move up to the A group. Six defeats with a total of 67 goals conceded, however, meant the last place and thus the immediate relegation to the B group of the World Championships. Eighth place, however, still means the best placement of an Austrian U20 selection at world championships. The Austrians were able to hold onto the second performance level until 1988, but then had to accept relegation to the third class. After the immediate resurgence, the Austrian offspring played again in the B World Cup until 1996, when the playdowns were lost to the French offspring . This time the immediate promotion was missed and it was not until 2000 that the promotion to the second highest division of the Junior World Championships, now called Division I , was achieved. Just three years later, he was promoted to the top division. But like 23 years earlier, promotion to the top division was followed by immediate relegation. Even when they last participated in the top division in 2010 , they failed to stay up, so that the alpine juniors were on the ice for ten years in the second-class division I. It was only after 10 years in Division I Group A that the fourth promotion to the top division was achieved in 2020 .
