Participants, venues and periods

mode

The ice hockey world championship is played in a total of six tournaments with different levels of participants. The top division plays with ten teams, divisions I and II with twelve each and division III with eight players.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams are divided into two groups of six teams. Division III will play with eight participants, as it did two years ago. Both participants in the qualification of the previous year were accepted into Division III and the last actually relegated, the New Zealand team, remained in Division III.

The last placed in the relegation round descends from the top division into group A of division I. For the same reason, the first-placed rider will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth-placed rider will be relegated to Group B of Division I. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to Division II A, II B and (as far as promotion is concerned) Division III. Whether teams from Division III have to be relegated depends on whether a qualifying tournament will be held again in 2020.

The Division III tournament was held from January 14th to 20th, 2019 in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík . The games took place in Skautahöllin í Laugardal with a capacity of 1,500 . A total of 3,155 spectators attended the 20 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 157 per game.

In contrast to the previous year, eight teams took part in the tournament this time, since in addition to the relegated from Division II, Turkey, and the four remaining nations of the previous year, New Zealand was actually relegated from the previous year as well as the promoted South Africa and subsequently also the Republic of China (Taiwan ), were admitted to participate in Division III. Therefore, the mode of the tournament was changed: the eight teams were divided into two groups of four. While the first two teams each crossed the semifinals, in which the participants of the final and game for third place were determined, the third and fourth placed teams also played the participants in the placement games for fifth and seventh place crosswise.
