The 14th ice hockey world championships of the U18 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2012 in the age group of under eighteen year olds (U18). Between March 11th and April 22nd 2012, a total of 40 national teams took part in the six tournaments of the top division and divisions I to III.

For the seventh time in total and for the fourth time in a row, the world champions became the United States' team, which, as in 2010 and 2011, clearly defeated Sweden 7-0 in the final. Canada took third place. The German team confirmed the good result of the previous year and again finished sixth, Switzerland - also like last year - finished the tournament in seventh place in the top division. As a climber in Group B of Division I, Austria took a good third place and ended up in 19th place in the World Cup.

The teams of the teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hong Kong, which were registered for the first time for Group B of Division III, were not allowed to start or also withdrew. Since there were only two participants left with Turkey and Mongolia and the participation of the Mongols in December 2011 was not considered guaranteed, the world association canceled the tournament without replacement. Mode changes

Comparison of the previous format (left) with the new regulation (right) based on the tournaments of the Men's World Cup

For the first time since the men's world championships in 2001 , the competitions were subjected to a far-reaching reform. The respective divisions retain their number of participants - the top division continues to play with 16 teams, divisions I and II continue to have twelve and division III with six - but the competition formats are changing fundamentally. The reason for the reform, which is also being introduced in the area of U20 and U18 juniors, is that, according to a study by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, between 49 and 68 percent of all games in the 2010/11 season with five or more goals Difference ended.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams will continue to be divided into two groups of six teams. However, this no longer takes place on the basis of the world rankings, so that both groups are positioned as evenly as possible, but once on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2011 . The six better-placed teams play in group A of the divisions in the first year, while group B contains the worse-placed teams. In the following years, the group composition is self-explanatory due to the promotion and relegation regulations.

Division III will continue to play in a group of six teams, with an optional qualification depending on the number of registered participants.

The mode changes also affect the promotion and relegation regulations of the individual divisions. From the top division only the last placed in the relegation round descends into division IA. For this reason, only the first placed rider will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with a promoted and relegated team also applies to Division II A, and a team is promoted from Division II B. In contrast, two teams descend from Division II B and thus two teams from Division III. There is no direct relegation from Division III in this sense. Depending on a possible qualification for Division III, the last two teams placed in Division III of the previous year must compete with the newly registered national teams in the qualification in order to play the two free places.

The U18 World Cup was held from April 12 to 22, 2012 in the Czech cities of Brno , Znojmo and Břeclav . The games were played in the Kajot Arena (7,200 seats) in Brno and in the Zimní stadium in Znojmo with 5,500 seats. Due to the success of HC Kometa Brno in the play-offs of the Czech Extraliga , the Kajot Arena was not available for all scheduled matches. On April 5, the Alcaplast aréna in Břeclav, which can hold 4,200 spectators, was added as the third venue.

Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2011 World Cup according to the following key:

After the group matches in the preliminary round, the two group winners qualify directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up and thirds in the group each play a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The fourth and fifth of the group games contest - if the result of the direct encounter from the preliminary round is taken with them - the relegation round and determine two relegated to Division I.

Group B in Erzurum, Turkey

The competition of Group B of Division III was to be held from March 11th to 17th, 2012 in Erzurum , Turkey . The games were to take place in Erzurum Gençlik Hizmetleri ve Spor İl Müdürlüğü with a capacity of 3,000 .

Last year's participants Israel and Ireland retrospectively withdrew their registered teams for Group B of Division III.
