Andrew Copp (born July 8, 1994 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League since March 2015 .
Career
youth
Andrew Copp was born in Ann Arbor into an ice hockey family. His father worked as a junior ice hockey coach and later as a scout for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), while his mother worked full-time as an ice skating coach, including for the Michigan Wolverines of the University of Michigan . Andrew Copp would play for both teams, the NTDP and the Wolverines, during his career. In his youth he played for the youth teams of the Compuware hockey program in Plymouth while attending Skyline High School in his hometown. In the summer of 2010 he was invited by the USA Hockey NTDP, based directly in Ann Arbor, to play for the next two years in the country's central talent factory. Copp, however, rejected this offer for the time being, as he also played American football (at his high school) at a high level parallel to ice hockey and should have given up this sport. In December 2010, however, he was contacted again by the NTDP, which needed another striker for an upcoming game due to injuries. Copp said, initially intended as a temporary replacement, and was so convincing in a few games that he was accepted into the NTDP and he was still allowed to continue to be active in the football team at his school.
Overall, Copp spent about one and a half years in the NTDP and, since the teams also act as junior national teams of the USA, took part in the U18 World Cup in 2012 , where he won the gold medal. At the same time, he graduated from high school and set a Michigan state school record on the football team by throwing passes for 557 yards in one game .
University of Michigan
At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, the center received a scholarship at the University of Michigan , where it played for the Wolverines from then on , while also taking the International Studies course . As a freshman , Copp scored 21 points in 38 games and was selected in the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2013 in 104th position by the Winnipeg Jets . With the start of the next season, the attacker was appointed assistant captain, as he already had an exceptional level of maturity, according to his coach Red Berenson . At the same time, he increased his statistics this season to 29 points from 33 games and took part in the U20 World Cup at the turn of the year 2013/14 , where he also acted as assistant captain. The team took fifth place; Copp had five assists.
In his final season as Wolverine , Copp led the team as captain and was named to the Second All-Star Team of the Big Ten Conference . In March 2015, he then signed an entry-level contract with Winnipeg Jets.
Winnipeg Jets
At the end of the regular 2014/15 season, Copp made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Jets and directly produced a first goal assist. During the preparation for the following season he earned a regular place in the NHL squad and is then regularly on the ice for the Jets.
At the 2017 World Cup , Copp made his debut for the senior national team in his home country, finishing fifth with the team.
