Kyle Connor (born December 9, 1996 in Clinton Township , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League since April 2016 .

Career

youth

Kyle Connor went through the Belle Tire junior teams from the Detroit area in his youth . In the summer of 2012, the attacker moved to the Youngstown Phantoms from the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States. As a rookie , he got 41 scorer points in 62 games, so that a little later he belonged to the U18 selection of the USA, which won the silver medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2013 . In the following season 2013/14 he made his breakthrough in USHL, so Connor scored 31 goals and 43 assists in 56 games and was appointed to the league's First All-Star Team at the end of the season. He was then again part of the US U18 national team, which won the gold medal at the 2014 U18 World Cup . Connor himself achieved a tournament- best plus / minus statistic of +8.

After the attacker had led in the following season in points (80), the USHL and was named player of the year who elected him Winnipeg Jets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft at 17th overall position. Since Connor had retired from the USHL for reasons of age, he began studying at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2015 and played at the same time for their ice hockey team, the Wolverines , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In the Wolverines jersey, the American managed an outstanding freshman season in which he achieved an average of almost 2.0 points per game (71 points in 38 games) and won the championship in the Big Ten Conference with the team . He also set a record for most goals by a freshman at the University of Michigan with 35 goals. He was also voted Rookie and Player of the Year at the Conference and was appointed to the First All-Star Team. In addition, Connor was one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which honors the best college player in the country, alongside Jimmy Vesey (later winner) and Thatcher Demko .

NHL

After his first season in college, he signed an entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets in April 2016 . He then took part in the 2016 World Cup with Team USA in May of the same year , where he finished fourth with the team. In the 2017/18 season, Connor established himself in the NHL line-up of the Jets, scored 57 points and also led all rookies in the league with 31 goals. After 66 scorer points in the following season, he signed a new seven-year contract in Winnipeg in September 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of 7.14 million US dollars. In the following season 2019/20 he achieved a points average of over 1.0 per game for the first time (73 points in 71 games).
