Mark Scheifele (born March 15, 1993 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League since October 2011 . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .
Career
In 2010 Scheifele left his home club, the Kitchener Dutchmen, and moved to the Barrie Colts in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . There he was fourth-best scorer in the rookie classification and second-best scorer of his team in his first season in the OHL with 75 points .
In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Scheifele was selected seventh by the Winnipeg Jets . It was the relocated team's first draft vote. After the striker completed the preparatory games for the NHL season as the team's best point player, he received his first contract on October 3, 2011. On October 9, he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1: 5 loss to the Montréal Canadiens . After seven games, in which he also scored his first goal, he was returned to the Barrie Colts for further development.
In the 2012/13 season Scheifele reached the OHL final with the Colts. With 41 points he was the best scorer in the playoffs and the best point player on his team throughout the season.
Scheifele has been part of the NHL line-up of the Jets since the 2013/14 season. In the 2015/16 season he scored 29 goals and 32 assists, leading the Jets for the first time in hits. The attacker significantly increased his personal statistics the following year when he set a new team record with 82 scorer points and was among the top 10 scorers in the league for the first time .
International
In the spring of 2011, he took part in the U18 World Junior Championship for Canada , where he scored eight points in seven games. At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2012 he and his team won the bronze medal. He made his debut in the senior national team of his home country at the 2014 World Cup . Two years later, he was back in Team Canada, with whom he won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup . This was followed a year later by the silver medal at the 2017 World Cup .
