from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kalonymos ben Meschullam (died May 27, 1096 in Mainz ) was a Jewish poet, scholar and rabbi, son of Meschullam ben Kalonymos and until the persecution of the Jews at the time of the First Crusade ( Gezerot Tatnu ) 1096 chief rabbi of the Jewish community in Mainz.

Meschullam comes from the family association of the Kalonymiden , who originally came from Lucca in Italy and later settled in Provence and Germany, in Mainz and Speyer .

Kalonymos ben Meschullam wrote on behalf of the Rhenish communities to the chief liege lord of the duke, Emperor Heinrich IV , who had protected the Jews up until then, and asked him unsuccessfully to prevent the pogroms. He is mentioned in the story of Amnon von Mainz , from whom he is said to have received the text of Pijjut Unetaneh tokef in a dream . According to the report of the chronicler Solomon bar Simson, he was murdered or committed suicide in 1096 as part of the above-mentioned Jewish pogrom ( Kiddusch HaSchem ).
