Luca Sbisa (born January 30, 1990 in Ozieri ) is a Swiss ice hockey player of Italian descent who has been under contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League since October 2019 and plays there in the position of defender .
Career
Born in Ozieri , Italy , Sbisa grew up in Oberägeri, Switzerland and began his career in the youth division of EV Zug . From 2006 he played for the elite A-Juniors of the club and made his debut in the National League A for the first team of EV Zug in the 2006/07 season . Overall, he completed eight NLA appearances for the club, but also came in first division EHC Seewen Herti in the first league used. To increase his chances of a good draft placement, he moved to North America in the summer of 2007 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes from the Western Hockey League , where he was one of the top performers in the team. After a U20 World Cup in 2008 that was personally successful for him , he was selected in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in 19th place by the Philadelphia Flyers .
As part of the Flyers training camp in autumn 2008, Sbisa was able to distinguish himself through good defensive behavior and an excellent game overview for his age, so that he was in the Flyers' NHL squad at the beginning of the 2008/09 season . He also signed a three-year contract with Flyers on October 1, 2008. After a few games in the first half of the season for the Flyers, they sent him back to the WHL during the season. As part of the NHL Entry Draft 2009 Sbisa was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks on July 26, 2009 along with Joffrey Lupul and some draft picks . In return, Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle moved to Philadelphia.
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he was initially a member of the Ducks NHL squad, but was sent back to his junior team in October 2009. In January he was sent to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for Jacob Berglund and Daniel Johnston .
From the 2010/11 season Sbisa was one of the permanent staff in the Ducks defense and he was particularly characterized by his physical game. On December 28, 2010 Luca Sbisa managed his first goal in the NHL in the game against the Phoenix Coyotes . He met to lead 1-0. In the end, the Ducks won 3-1.
In March 2011, Sbisa extended his contract with the Anaheim Ducks until the end of the 2014/15 season and received a total of $ 8.7 million. In his second season as a regular at the Anaheim Ducks, Sbisa scored five goals and 19 assists, but the Ducks missed the playoffs, mainly due to a very poor first half of the season. Due to the lockout in the NHL, he returned to Switzerland in September 2012 and played for HC Lugano until the end of December . During the Spengler Cup 2012 he played as a guest player for Adler Mannheim .
In June 2014, Sbisa and Nick Bonino and the first and third round suffrage for the NHL Entry Draft 2014 was given by the Ducks to the Vancouver Canucks , who in return received Ryan Kesler and a third round suffrage for the 2015 draft.
In June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . With the team he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost to the Washington Capitals there . Subsequently, his expiring contract with the Golden Knights was not extended, so he took part as a free agent at the training camp of the New York Islanders , which finally provided him with a new one-year contract in September 2018. This was not renewed in the summer of 2019, so that he returned to the Anaheim Ducks in October of the same year and also signed a one-year contract there. However, when they wanted to send him to the AHL via the waiver , the Winnipeg Jets took over the Swiss contractor.
