Laine began playing ice hockey in his hometown with Ilves Tampere at the age of four before moving to Tappara Tampere. There he caused a stir early on when he finished the 2013/14 season as the second youngest player in the U20 team as the league's fifth-best goalscorer. In the following season he made his debut for Tappara in the Liiga , but spent the season mainly with LeKi Lempäälä in the second highest Finnish division, the Mestis . He has been a permanent member of the Tappara squad since the beginning of the 2015/16 season, winning the championship with the team at the end of his first full first division season. He scored 14 points in 17 playoff games , making him the youngest player to date to receive the Jari Kurri trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. In addition, he had already led all rookies in goals (17) and points (33) in the regular season , so that he received the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as the best newcomer to the league at the end of the season .

In the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2016 , the Winnipeg Jets selected him in second position and in July 2016 provided him with an entry contract that guarantees the attacker an annual salary of 3.575 million US dollars. In his first season in the National Hockey League (NHL), Laine set two team records with 36 goals and 64 points as a rookie and was invited to the 2017 NHL All-Star Game and as an NHL rookie during the season February month excellent. In addition, he placed in the rookie scorer list of the league in second place behind Auston Matthews and was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie, which, however, won in the episode Matthews. However, Laine was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team .

Laine scored 44 goals in the 2017/18 season, placing him in second place in the league's list of goalscorers behind Alexander Ovetschkin (49). With the Jets he reached the conference finals in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, but lost to the Vegas Golden Knights there . In the following season 2018/19, however, he did not succeed in building on his previously shown performances, so that in September 2019 he only signed a two-year contract instead of a long-term contract. This is said to bring him an average annual salary of 6.75 million US dollars for the time being, while the Finn will try to increase his value to the team again.

Observers compared Laine with Ilya Kovalchuk and his shooting technique with that of Alexander Ovechkin.

Once again he was - together with the US-American Auston Matthews - top scorer of the tournament, also the third best scorer of the tournament and thus played a leading role in winning the title for the Finnish team.
