Gustav "Gus" Nyquist (born September 1, 1989 in Halmstad ) is a Swedish ice hockey player . The winger has been playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League (NHL) since July 2019 . Previously, he was almost eight years the franchise of the Detroit Red Wings , which it at position 121 in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft were selected, and played briefly for the San Jose Sharks . He became world champion with the Swedish national team in 2018 and also won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics .
Career
youth
In his homeland, Nyquist played for the Malmö Redhawks . In 2006 he was at the TV-swaddling , a traditional, national youth tournament in Sweden with an age limit for the players of 16 years, in the selection of the Landskap Skåne . His team took second place after Gothenburg .
Nyquist then moved to study in the United States and played three seasons for the Maine Black Bears , the University of Maine team , from the Hockey East Association in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In all three seasons he was the best scorer on his team. In the 2009/10 season he even scored the most points scorer in the NCAA. After his junior years , he left the Black Bears and signed a two-year entry level contract on March 25, 2011 with the Detroit Red Wings . At the University of Maine, Nyquist is remembered as an important ice hockey player, as he was one of the finalists of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for his university in 2010 , which Blake Geoffrion finally received that year .
NHL
Nyquist played his first AHL game on March 25, 2011 for the Red Wings farm team , Grand Rapids Griffins , against the Texas Stars . In his second AHL game on March 26, 2011, again against the Texas Stars, he scored his first AHL goal after a pass from Jamie Tardif . Nyquist played his first game in the NHL on November 1, 2011 in a game between the Red Wings and the Minnesota Wild . On March 26, 2012, he scored his first NHL goal in his career after a pass from Pawel Dazjuk to Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets .
Nyquist made his debut in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs a few days later on April 13, 2012 against the Nashville Predators . Nyquist had been recalled by Grand Rapids for this because the Red Wings center forward Darren Helm suffered a gaping wound on his right forearm in the first game through a cut through the runner of his opponent Alexander Radulow , which resulted in an operation and for Helm meant the end of the season. In the second game of the 2013 NHL play-offs, Nyquist scored the decisive overtime goal against the Anaheim Ducks , which equalized the series to 1-1. Nyquist scored the first goal in the third game of the 2013 semifinal series in the Western Conference against the Chicago Blackhawks .
On August 20, 2013, Detroit Red Wings signed a two-year contract with Nyquist with a base salary of $ 1.9 million. On February 2, 2014, Nyquist scored his first hat trick in the NHL in a game against the Washington Capitals . In the following seasons, the Swede, whose contract was again extended by four years in the summer of 2015, finally developed into one of the top performers at Red Wings, who, with the exception of the 2014/15 season, always reached 40 scorer points . In February 2019, a few months before his contract expired, he switched to a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2019 and a conditional third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 , which can also become a second-round vote if the Sharks have the Reach the finals of the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs or Nyquist and the team agree on a new working paper, from the Detroit Red Wings to the San Jose Sharks . The Red Wings continued to take over 30 percent of the Swede's salary until the end of the season.
Nyquist ended the season in San Jose and then moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent in July 2019 , with whom he signed a four-year contract that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.5 million.
