Career
Junior career
David Savard began his junior career with Drakkar de Baie-Comeau in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). After 35 games for the team, in which he had managed one goal and six assists , he was transferred to the Moncton Wildcats in the neighboring province of New Brunswick . There he was initially unable to establish himself in the team. At the end of the season, Savard hadn't scored a single goal and posted a plus / minus balance of -19.
In the 2008/09 season he was finally able to earn a place in the Wildcats squad. During the season he scored 44 points scorer and was able to improve his plus / minus balance to +29. At the same time, the Wildcats managed to get into the playoffs by winning the Atlantique division , but where they failed in the second round. In the NHL Entry Draft 2009 Savard was selected in the fourth round in a total of 94th position by the Columbus Blue Jackets .
The following season , Savard was named assistant captain of the team. Again, he was able to increase his performance compared to the previous season and recorded a total of 77 points, which he led the defender statistics of the league. In January 2010, Savard managed to score at least one point in 16 consecutive games. With 64 assists he was also the best assists of the season. With both values, he set defender records in the Moncton Wildcats franchise. As the third best team in the league, the Wildcats once again made it into the playoffs, where they advanced to the final with only three defeats. There the team met the Saint John Sea Dogs , the best team of the regular season. With seven assists in the final series, Savard was instrumental in the 4-2 win over the Sea Dogs and thus winning the Coupe du Président . His plus / minus balance of +20 in the playoffs was also best in the league. By winning the title, the Wildcats were also qualified for the Memorial Cup 2010 , where they were eliminated after three defeats in the preliminary round. Savard scored one goal and one assist over the course of the tournament.
After the season, Savard was recognized for his achievements with the Trophée Kevin Lowe for the best defensive defender and the Trophée Émile Bouchard for the best defender in the league. In the choice of Defender of the Year for the umbrella organization CHL , he then prevailed against the best defenders from the other two Canadian junior leagues , Jake Muzzin from the Ontario Hockey League and Tyson Barrie from the Western Hockey League .
Professional career
In June 2010, the defender signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. First, however, he played with the farm team of the Blue Jackets, the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League .
In the 2010/11 season , Savard was the second youngest player in the Falcons squad. He scored his first goal in the professional field on December 17, 2010 in the game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . In total, he was 72 games for Springfield on the ice and was the team's best assists with 32 assists. He also scored 43 points, more than any other defender of the Falcons. However, the team clearly missed the playoffs.
Before the start of the 2011/12 NHL season , David Savard was appointed to the Columbus Blue Jackets roster for the first time. He played his first game in the NHL on October 7, 2011 when the season opened against the Nashville Predators . A week later he scored his first scorer point against the Dallas Stars when he was preparing for a goal from Václav Prospal . Savard scored his first goal in the NHL in his 18th game. In the 3-1 win against the Minnesota Wild , he hit with a slap shot from the blue line to 1-0 lead and was also voted the first star of the game. During the season, however, he switched back and forth between the NHL and the AHL several times. So he came to 31 games in Columbus and 44 missions in Springfield. There he got 22 points, making him the second best defender of the Falcons.
Since the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Savard has been part of the NHL Blue Jackets line-up. In addition, he won the gold medal with the national team at the 2015 World Cup .
