Cameron "Cam" Atkinson (born June 5, 1989 in Riverside , Connecticut ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since 2011 .
Career
Cam Atkinson began his career as a hockey player at Boston College , which he attended from 2008 to 2011, while he was also active for its ice hockey team in Hockey East . In 2010, the winger won the NCAA championship and the Hockey East championship with Boston College . He himself was elected to the second All-Star Team for Hockey East. In 2011 he was also a Master of Hockey East with Boston College. In 2011 he was also voted the most valuable player in Hockey East and was part of their first All-Star team. In addition, he was elected to the first All-American team of the NCAA.
At the NHL Entry Draft 2008 Atkinson was selected in the sixth round as a total of 157 players from the Columbus Blue Jackets . Towards the end of the 2010/11 season he made his professional ice hockey debut when he scored three goals and two assists in five games in the American Hockey League for Columbus' farm team Springfield Falcons . In the following season , the American ran for the first time for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League . In his rookie year he scored seven goals and seven assists in 27 NHL games. At the same time, however, he continued to play predominantly for the Springfield Falcons in the AHL and took part in the AHL All-Star Classic .
At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, the attacker established himself in the Blue Jackets line-up and led his team in scorer points in the 2015/16 season (with Brandon Saad ) and 2016/17. In November 2017, he signed a new seven-year contract in Columbus, which - starting with the 2018/19 season - should bring him an average annual salary of 5.875 million US dollars. That same season, Atkinson scored 41 goals, equaling Rick Nash's franchise record from 2004.
International
With the USA national team , Atkinson took part in the 2012 and 2018 World Championships and won the bronze medal in 2018.
