Emil Erik Bemström (born June 1, 1999 in Nyköping ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL) since May 2019 and plays there in the position of the center .
Career
Emil Bemström was born in Nyköping and played for Järna SK from Järna in his youth . For the 2015/16 season he moved to the junior division of Leksands IF , for whose U20 he ran from then on in the J20 SuperElit , the highest-ranking junior league in Sweden. There he achieved in the following year with 33 scorer points from 28 games an average of over 1.0 per game and also made his debut for the men's selection of Leksands IF in the Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL). Subsequently, the Columbus Blue Jackets considered him in 117th position in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . In the 2017/18 season, the attacker ran after relegation from the SHL in the second-rate Allsvenskan , where the team missed direct promotion to the playoffs. As a result, Bemström returned to SHL by moving, so he joined Djurgårdens IF in May 2018 . There he increased his performance significantly, so he was with 23 goals scored with the Håkan Loob Trophy best goalscorer in the league. He was also honored as Årets nykomling , the best rookie of the year.
Following these achievements, Bemström signed an entry-level contract with Columbus Blue Jackets in May 2019 . As part of the preparation for the 2019/20 season, he earned a place in their squad, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2019 and has been there regularly since then.
International
Bemström gained his first international experience at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2016 . There he took fourth place with the Swedish selection as well as in the U18 World Cup 2017 that followed a little later . He then took part in the 2019 U20 World Cup with the U20 national team of his home country , where the Tre Kronor took fifth place. He finally made his debut for the Swedish national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour of the 2018/19 season .
