Zachary "Zach" Werenski (born July 19, 1997 in Grosse Pointe , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player . The defender has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since March 2016 , which selected him in eighth position in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft .

Career

youth

Zach Werenski was born in Grosse Pointe and began playing ice hockey just like his two years older brother. In his youth, he played in the Belle Tire youth program and for the Little Caesars , before moving to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US ice hockey association, at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . With the NTDP, the defender took part in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and also acted as assistant captain of the U17 team, with which he won the gold medal at the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge .

In the fall of 2014, Werenski enrolled at the University of Michigan and from then on played for their ice hockey team, the Wolverines , in the Big Ten Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) game. He played his freshman season as the youngest player in the entire NCAA and still scored 25 points in 35 games, so that at the end of the season he was appointed to the First All-Star Team of the Big Ten Conference. He also represented the U20 national team of the USA at the U20 World Cup in 2015 and finished fifth with the team. In the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2015 , Werenski was considered a promising talent after this season, so that he was then selected in 8th position by the Columbus Blue Jackets . For the time being, however, he spent another season with the Wolverines, with whom he won the Big Ten Conference championship in 2016, was reappointed to the First All-Star Team and was named Defensive Player of the Year. Over the turn of the year he won the bronze medal with the U20s at the U20 World Cup in 2016 and was also appointed to the All-Star Team and named the best defender of the tournament.

NHL

After the college season, the Columbus Blue Jackets provided him with an entry contract and sent the defender to their farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League (AHL). Werenski made his professional debut there at the end of the regular season and was instrumental in the Monsters' Calder Cup win in the subsequent playoffs with five goals and nine assists . As part of the preparation for the following 2016/17 season, the defender earned a place in the NHL squad and subsequently made his debut in October 2016 in the National Hockey League . After he had scored 16 points in 21 games, the defender was named NHL Rookie of the Month for November. Overall, he came to 47 points in his first NHL season, leading all rookie defenders in the league. He was also nominated as one of three newcomers to the league for the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie of the year (which Auston Matthews won) and was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . The following year, Werenski represented the Blue Jackets at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game .

In September 2019, the defense attorney signed a new three-year contract in Columbus that should earn him an average annual salary of $ five million.
