Joonas Korpisalo (born April 28, 1994 in Pori ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets from the National Hockey League since March 2014 . His father Jari Korpisalo was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Korpisalo was born in Pori while his father played there in the 1990s for Ässät Pori in the SM-liiga . In the junior sector he was ultimately active for Karhu-Kissat Helsinki, his father's regular club. From there he moved to local rivals Jokerit Helsinki, where he made his professional debut in the 2012/13 season . After several loan deals - including to Kiekko-Vantaa , Kisa Lempäälä and Ilves Tampere - Tampere finally signed the trained goalkeeper for the 2014/15 season , where he quickly became a regular goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, the Columbus Blue Jackets , who had selected Korpisalo in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 62nd place, insisted on the existing contract they had signed with him in March 2014. Before the end of the season in North America, they ordered the goalkeeper into their farm team , the Springfield Falcons , in the American Hockey League . For the 2015/16 season Korpisalo made the leap into the regular squad of the Blue Jackets and shared the goalkeeping post with Sergei Bobrowski and Curtis McElhinney . After the end of the NHL season, the goalkeeper supported the AHL farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters , in the play-offs for the Calder Cup . He finally won this in the final series against the Hershey Bears with the team.
In the 2018/19 season, Korpisalo was on the ice for the first time exclusively in the NHL, whereupon his expiring contract was extended by one year in the summer of 2019. Korpisalo set a new NHL record as part of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs . In the first game of the Conference quarterfinals against the Tampa Bay Lightning , which the Blue Jackets lost 3-2 in the fifth overtime , he parried 85 shots. He surpassed the previous record of Kelly Hrudey , who recorded 73 parades in the seventh game of the division semi-finals of the 1987 playoffs against the Washington Capitals .
International
On the international stage, Korpisalo represented his home country at the U18 Junior World Championship 2012 and the U20 Junior World Championship 2013 . He was also part of the Finnish team at the 2011 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival and the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament .
