Jari Korpisalo (born February 17, 1966 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active during his career for the EV Landshut and the Munich Barons in the German Ice Hockey League . His son Joonas Korpisalo is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Korpisalo began his career in 1985 in the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League with the Granby Bisons , before returning to his homeland in Finland after just one season, where he played four seasons for Karhu-Kissat Helsinki and a SaPKo Savonlinna . In Helsinki , the striker was one of the team's top players and scored 189 points in a total of 130 games. As a result, those responsible for the Finnish first division team Ässät Pori became aware of the then 24-year-old and transferred him to the SM-liiga in the summer of 1990 .
In Pori , the left shooter was one of the top performers and public favorites. After seven seasons and 364 league games, he forced a move abroad and was signed by EV Landshut for the 1997/98 season . In Landshut , the Finn was unable to match the time at Ässät Pori in terms of points, so he scored 17 points in 46 games in his first season in the DEL. He was only able to increase this point yield to a limited extent in the following year and so his expiring contract was not extended in summer 1999. After EV Landshut withdrew from the DEL, the Finn joined the newly founded DEL team Munich Barons.
With the Barons he was able to win the German championship in the 1999/2000 season after a 3-1 final win after games against the Kölner Haie . In this season he was able to score 24 points in 58 games and have a plus / minus statistic of +13. He then went back to Finland after three years in Germany. There he accepted a contract offer from the Finnish club Ässät Pori, for which he was active between 1990 and 1997. Korpisalo then stayed in Pori until 2005 and then ended his active ice hockey career at the age of 39. A little later his jersey number with the number 17 was blocked by the club and has not been awarded since then.
International
Korpisalo was nominated for the Finnish junior national team for the first time in 1984 . Two years later he took part with the Juniors of Finland in the 1986 World Cup in Canada, where he finished sixth with his team. It wasn't until seven years later that he put on his skates again for his home country when he took part in the 1993 World Cup with the Finnish A-team .
