Karhu-Kissat (German: Katzenbär ) is a Finnish ice hockey club from Helsinki that was founded in 1938 . It is the second oldest pure ice hockey club in Finland. The teams from Karhu-Kissat play their home games in the ice rinks of Pirkkola , Oulunkylä , Konala , Malmi and Stadin hallit .

history

Pirkkolan Jäähalli, one of the club's venues

Karhu-Kissat was founded in 1938 as Helsinki's first pure ice hockey club by former players from HJK Helsinki . The new club was financed by Otto Wuorio , who owned a successful construction company and later became President of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation.

The club's first venue was an open ice rink in Kamppi . At the end of the 1940s, the club moved to Hesperia Park, where a Pesäpallo square was converted into a makeshift ice rink in winter. In the late 1950s, the company moved to the railing of what is now Helsingin Jäähalli , where a new artificial ice rink had been completed. The actual Helsingin Jäähalli was opened in 1966 and was the home ground of Karhu-Kissat for many years.

Between 1951 and 1957 the club played continuously in the top division of the country, the SM-sarja . 1954 reached Karhu-Kissat the Finnish runner-up title and thus the greatest success in the club's history.

In the late 1960s, scenes from the film The Billion Dollar Brain were filmed in Helsinki , including scenes from an ice hockey game. Players from Karhu-Kissat and RU-38 served as extras and stuntmen .

The club's best-known players include the national goalkeeper Unto Wiitala as well as Lauri Mononen and Seppo Repo . 1974 Karhu-Kissat rose from the highest to the fifth division, thus ending the era of first class for the club. In 1984 he was once again promoted to the second class I-divisioona , before relegation for financial reasons followed in 1995.

In 2002 the men's team was completely dissolved and only revived in 2010. Today the club is mainly active in the youth sector in the western part of Helsinki. For many years, Jari Korpisalo was the sporting director of the club, which today runs 13 youth teams, an ice hockey school, a women's team and, since 2015, a men's team in the fifth-class III-divisioona . In addition, the club works with Jokerit Helsinki in the youth field .
