Timo Lehkonen (born January 8, 1966 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach and functionary, who was among other things Finnish champion with TPS Turku during his active time from 1983 to 1995 .
Career
Timo Lehkonen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Jokerit Helsinki , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 1983/84 season . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1984 in the fifth round as a total of 90th player by the Chicago Blackhawks . The goalkeeper then spent the 1984/85 season with the Toronto Marlboros in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . After a year in North America, he returned to Jokerit Helsinki, for which he was regularly used in the SM-liiga.
For the 1987/88 season Lehkonen moved within the SM-liiga to TPS Turku . With his team he was Finnish champion in the following season . The former junior international was able to convince in the main round in his twelve missions with an average of 2.33 goals against and a catch rate of 92.8 percent, whereupon he stood between the posts in the playoffs as a regular goalkeeper for TPS and his catch rate was 94.6 percent eight games could even improve. As a reward, he then received the Urpo Ylönen trophy as the best goalkeeper in the SM-liiga.
From 1989 to 1993 Lehkonen played for HPK Hämeenlinna , with whom he failed in the 1992/93 season in the playoff final for the Finnish championship with 1: 3 wins in the best-of-five series at his ex-club TPS Turku . The Finn, who had led HPK to his greatest club success to date, received the Urpo-Ylönen trophy for the second time in his career as the best goalkeeper in the SM-liiga at the end of the season. He then paused for a year with ice hockey before he played again for TuTo Hockey in the SM-liiga in the 1994/95 season. He then ended his career at the age of 29.
From 2005 to 2009 Lehkonen worked as an assistant coach for his ex-club HPK Hämeenlinna and won the Finnish championship title with his team in this position in the 2005/06 season . In the 2006/07 season he was also the head coach of the U20 juniors of HPK in the Jr. A SM-liiga. At the U20 World Junior Championship in 2006 , he was assistant coach of the Finnish U20 national team under Hannu Aravirta . From 2007 to 2010 he worked as an assistant for the senior national team, with whose head coach Jukka Jalonen he had already worked successfully at HPK Hämeenlinna. Since the 2010/11 season, Lehkonen has been Director of Player Personnel at HPK's U20 juniors.
International
For Finland Lehkonen took part in the U18 Junior European Championship 1983 , where he won the silver medal with his team, and the U20 Junior World Championships in 1985 and 1986 . At the U20 Junior World Championship in 1985 he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament.
