Malmi ( Swedish Malm ) is a district ( kaupunginosa ) in the north of the Finnish capital Helsinki .

The sub-areas Ylä-Malmi, Ala-Malmi, Pihlajamäki, Tattariharju, Malmin lenkokenttä and Pihjalisto are subordinate to the district. The statistical urban district ( peruspiiri ) Malmi, on the other hand, includes the sub-areas Ylä-Malmi, Ala-Malmi, Tattariharju, Malmin lentokenttä and the sub-areas Tapaninvainio and Tapanila, which together form the district Tapaninkylä, while Pihlajisto and Pihlajamäki are subordinate to the district Latokartano. The Vantaanjoki flows west of Pihlajisto .

Clockwise, Malmi borders the other districts of Suurmetsä , Mellunkylä , Viikki , Oulunkylä , Pukinmäki and Tapaninkylä .

Malmi was incorporated into the city of Helsinki in 1946 as part of a major regional reform. Malmi was previously part and center of the Helsinki rural community .

The district center is the area around the Malmi train station with the Malmintori and Malmin Nova shopping centers. On the cemetery Malmi numerous Finnish personalities are buried, about Mauno Pekkala , Tapio Rautavaara and Olavi Virta and numerous officials of the Communist Party of Finland .

In the district is the Malmi station , where trains of the local rail traffic in the Helsinki region on the lines I (to Tikkurila ), K and N (to Kerava ) and T (to Riihimäki ) stop.

Helsinki-Malmi Airport, which opened in 1936, is to the east of the district . After Helsinki-Vantaa Airport opened in 1952, scheduled air traffic to and from Malmi was gradually discontinued. Today it serves, among other things, as a training airport.

Important roads are Kantatie 45 west of Malmi and southeastern Valtatie 4, which leads south to the Vanhakaupunki district and northwards through Vantaa and Kerava Finland to Utsjoki completely. Both expressways are crossed by the Kehä I / Seututie 101 ring road , which runs between Ala-Malmi and Pihlajamäki in an east-west direction.
