The Helsinki-Malmi Airport (also Malmi Airport ) is located in the district of Malmi the Finnish capital Helsinki . It is located about 10 kilometers northeast of the city center and was the city's main airport until the opening of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in 1952. Today it is used for general aviation and the Finnish border guard .

history

The first Airport (Helsinki Helsinki called) of the current district of Malmi took in 1936 in a swampy area on the site of its operation. Finnair's predecessor , Aero Oy, then switched from seaplanes to land planes and moved its flight operations to the current location of the airport. This was officially opened on May 15, 1938.

Malmi Airport was one of the first in the world to be planned as an international airport from the start. By the end of the 1930s, the domestic routes were already reaching all the major cities, and in 1940 you could fly to Petsamo .

The winter war suspended civil aviation in Malmi and the airport was used by the Finnish Air Force . In the Continuation War both civil and military aircraft operated by the Finnish and German air forces. After the end of the Continuation War in September 1944, the airport was under the administration of the Allied Control Commission and was not returned to the Finns until late 1946.

The aircraft, which became larger and heavier during the war, and the rapidly developing passenger operations, presented the airport with new challenges: The costs of converting the runways built on marshy ground would have been too high, so that one would oppose a conversion of the airport decided.

The new Seutula Airport (now Helsinki-Vantaa Airport ) opened in 1952. Finland got a new airport that met international standards. All scheduled air traffic was gradually moved to the new airport.

Present and Future

Helsinki-Malmi Airport is used by general aviation in Helsinki today. In addition to pilot training and commercial air traffic, it serves private aviation and is home to several aviation clubs. In 2002, half of all Finnish pilots and two thirds of all professional pilots were trained there. In exceptional situations, Helsinki-Malmi is also available to lighter passenger aircraft as an alternate airport for Helsinki-Vantaa. The border guard also used the airport until the end of 2016, when the state moved all its operations to other locations (around 14% of operations in Malmi).

From an air traffic point of view, Malmi Airport is the only freely accessible international airfield for light traffic within 150 km of the capital (Helsinki-Vantaa International is the only coordinated airport in Finland, which means there will be no unplanned traffic without a slot -Application served, which must be submitted hours in advance). In 2013 around 7,500 landings of flights between Malmi and other airports were registered only among Malmi's own airline companies, making Malmi the second largest airport for overland flights in Finland.

In 2004 Helsinki-Malmi Airport was included in the list of the 100 most endangered cultural monuments in the world compiled by the World Monuments Fund every two years . In June 2005 the airport was added to the WMF 2006 list again, and the Finnish working group of the international DoCoMoMo association also made an inventory of the airport.

The future of the airport has long been uncertain because the city of Helsinki has earmarked the site for long-term residential construction. The dispute over the closure of the airport escalated in 2005 when the city of Helsinki planned to prematurely terminate the lease agreement between the state and Helsinki, which was actually valid until 2034. Since the state was initially rather negative about this project and Helsinki was given large new construction areas elsewhere at the same time, the topic initially lost its relevance. In February 2011, Helsinki Mayor Jussi Pajunen assumed that the airport's ultimate fate would not be clear until after 2020.

On March 25, 2014, however, the Finnish government made the fundamental decision to close Helsinki-Malmi Airport and open the area for residential construction. Apartments for 20,000 - 30,000 people are to be built here. The airport is slated to close by the early 2020s at the latest. In its written decision, the government assumes that the border guard and civil aviation must be relocated to another airport before the closure.

On March 16, 2016, the European monument protection association Europa Nostra selected Helsinki-Malmi Airport as one of the seven most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe.

On December 30, 2016, Finavia , the largest operator of Finnish airports, ceased operations in Malmi. The airport has been fully owned by the City of Helsinki since January 1st, 2017. The city only operates Malmi as an uncontrolled airfield and only receives runway 18/36 for operation.

The legislative initiative "Lex Malmi" calls for the preservation of Malmi Airport in aviation through legislation. It was supported by more than 56,000 Finns in two months and submitted to the Finnish Parliament on February 8, 2017. The aim of the initiative is to ensure the future accessibility of Helsinki and Finland by air and to save the internationally recognized cultural heritage.
