The Oulu airport is located in northwest Finland , 15 kilometers southwest of the center of Oulu in the suburb of Oulunsalo . After Helsinki-Vantaa Airport , it is the second largest in Finland in terms of passenger volume. The airport is operated by the Finnish state airport company Finavia . The Finnish Air Force use it for training purposes.

Airlines and Destinations

Domestic Finnish scheduled flights are offered by Finnair to Helsinki and partly operated by My Jet Xpress Airlines . Also Norwegian Air International flies to the Helsinki-Vantaa from Oulu, partly carried out by SmartLynx Airlines , Jet Time and Norwegian Air Shuttle and Norwegian Air Sweden . In addition, Norwegian Air International offers flights to the Canary Islands airports Gran Canaria and Tenerife .

West Atlantic Sweden operates cargo flights .

On June 30, 1953, the airport was inaugurated by the landing of a Douglas DC-3 . Before 1953, the smaller Oritkari landing field was used for Oulu . The first terminal opened in 1958. The passenger terminal can handle up to one million passengers a year, but was expanded in the summer of 2007 and again in 2009.
