Oulunsalo

Oulunsalo [ ˈɔu̯lunsɑlɔ ] (Swedish historically Uleåsalo ) is a place and a former municipality in northwestern Finland. Oulunsalo was part of the Oulu administrative community . It is a southwest suburb of the city of Oulu . Oulunsalo is exclusively Finnish-speaking. Since January 1, 2013, Oulunsalo has been part of the municipality of Oulu.
The former municipality covers an area of 211.24 km 2 , of which 0.92 km 2 are inland water and 126.95 km 2 are sea water. The formerly independent municipality had the municipality number 567. At the time the municipality was dissolved on December 31, 2012, it had 9,878 inhabitants, the population density was 118.5 inhabitants / km².
The former municipality includes a peninsula in the Gulf of Bothnia , which was an island until around 1880, when the strait that separated it from the mainland closed due to the post-continental hub. It existed as a political unit since 1882 and, in addition to the parish village of Oulunsalo, included the places Keskipiiri, Koura, Kylänpuoli, Pajuniemi, Peuhu, Pitkäkangas, Salonpää and Varjakka.
Oulu Airport is located in Oulunsalo , after Helsinki-Vantaa the airport with the second highest number of passengers in Finland. In addition to the airport, the main employers are the municipality and the Kapteeni shopping center, which opened in 2005 . As in the entire Oulu area, numerous IT companies have settled here.
Oulunsalo is a center of Laestadianism . Many businesses in the city are run by members of this Protestant revival. They are formative in the cultural life of the community. The low average age of the population, which is around 30 years, is partly due to the high number of children in At leastadian families. Another factor is the influx, especially from inland Finland, due to the strong economic growth in recent years.
The wooden church built in 1891 by the architect Julius Basilier and a wooden housing estate on the island of Varjakka are among the few older buildings . The south coast borders the Liminganlahti bay, one of the most important bird areas in Finland.
