history
The airport was officially opened in 1937 and scheduled air traffic began in 1940. The airport and air traffic control building, the parking lot and the access to the airport were completed in the 1960s.
The airport was the home airport of the airline Air Åland, founded in 2005 . This operated different routes to Finland and Sweden. This included flights to Stockholm-Arlanda , Turku and Helsinki . In 2008 Air Åland transported a total of 61,000 passengers to and from Mariehamn. The flights to Helsinki were discontinued on May 28, 2012, as the line was in deficit since November 2011 due to competition from Flybe Nordic . Air Åland's flights were taken over by the Swedish airline Nextjet in 2012 .
The Turku Air also offered with Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain -Propellermaschinen charter flights to Turku on. The company stopped flight operations in 2016 due to low demand.
On May 16, 2018, NextJet declared bankruptcy and ceased flight operations. The parts of Nextjet became the Swedish Air Leap , which resumed flight operations at Mariehamn Airport in June 2018.
Special
Mariehamn Airport has a special feature. It is the only airport in Finland with a red runway. There is also the Kumlinge airfield , which also has a runway made of red asphalt. This results from the fact that Åland gets its road surface from the red Åland granite and as a result, asphalted and gravel roads on the island have a reddish color. Thus the runway and the tarmac at Mariehamn Airport also received this unique color. According to pilots, this is the best runway to land because it is easy to see in all weather conditions.
Incidents
- On November 8, 1963, a Douglas DC-3 / C-47A of Aero O / Y (Finnair) ( aircraft registration OH-LCA ) crashed near Mariehamn and burned out, killing 22 of the 25 occupants. The cause was most likely a defect in the captain's altimeter , which meant that the minimum descent altitude was not reached in very bad weather.
