World Monuments Fund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Monuments Fund ( WMF ) is a non-profit, international organization headquartered in New York City that works for the preservation of monuments and historical sites worldwide. The World Monuments Fund is funded by the American Express Foundation as the main sponsor and by around 25 other foundations, including the Brown Foundation , the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

World Monuments Watch

In 1995 American Express and WMF founded the World Monuments Watch (WMW). Every two years it compiles a list of the 100 most endangered cultural monuments, the List of Most Endangered Monuments . With the help of the list, the international public is made aware of the threatened monuments in order to raise donations and sponsorship money for their preservation. In the past ten years, these donations have been used to finance renovation work on 119 endangered cultural monuments in 59 countries. In 2006, for example, the renovation of the Old Bridge , a landmark of Heidelberg's old town - as the first cultural monument in Germany - was supported with 100,000 dollars (82,500 euros ) as part of the World Monument Watch program .
