Pasila ( Swedish. Böle ) is a district ( Finnish. Kaupunginosa ) and at the same time an urban district ( peruspiiri ) of the Finnish capital Helsinki . It is located at the northern end of the city center, about 3.5 km from the city center. Although Pasila is not part of the actual center, Pasila Station is the second busiest station in Finland. The district is home to a relatively large number of workplaces and several well-known facilities, including the Messezentrum ( Messukeskus ), the multi-functional hall Hartwall Areena and the radio and television studios of the public broadcaster YLE . The district's landmark, visible from afar, is the 146 m high television tower in Pasila .

The so-called main line of the Finnish railway cuts Pasila into two parts, which are connected by a bridge: East Pasila ( Itä-Pasila ) and West Pasila ( Länsi-Pasila ). The railway area in between is called Middle-Pasila ( Keski-Pasila ). To the north joins Nord-Pasila ( Pohjois-Pasila ), which is occupied by a large depot for passenger trains . Over 40% of the total area of the district is accounted for by traffic, more than 20% by offices and only approx. 5% by apartments.

history

East Pasila from the Air (1989). In the foreground the exhibition center, on the right the train station.

Pasila emerged in the 19th century as a rather sparsely populated suburb of Helsinki. The opening of the station in 1890 and the establishment of a machine shop at the beginning of the 20th century gradually brought momentum to development, and in 1912 the area known at the time as Fredriksberg or Puu-Pasila ("Wood Pasila") was incorporated. Since Pasila is much easier to reach from all directions than the center located on a peninsula, Eliel Saarinen suggested in 1918 that the main train station be relocated here and that Pasila be expanded into a kind of new center. At that time the idea was not taken up and Pasila remained a simple wooden house area, but in the late 1960s East Pasila and in the 1980s also West Pasila were completely rebuilt. Only a few remained of the old wooden houses. In East Pasila, large, gray prefabricated buildings were built in a brutalist style; Also, in accordance with the traffic planning of the time, car traffic and pedestrian traffic were separated on two different levels, similar to Merihaka . After the architecture of East Pasila received much criticism, West Pasila was built in a different, less concrete style.

future

Due to its convenient location in terms of transport, the district is to be increasingly developed into a second center of Helsinki in the future. Central Pasila, in particular, is to be profoundly redesigned. After the completion of the new port in the eastern district of Vuosaari (2008), the two previous cargo ports in the center of Helsinki have ceased operations and will be replaced with new residential and office areas. As a result, almost all of the rail freight traffic has moved to East Helsinki, so that large areas of Pasila that were previously used by the railways have become free.

What is certain is that in addition to new residential areas, above all new commercial space is to be created in Pasila. The district should distinguish itself particularly in the area of information technology and the media. The details of the future architecture have not yet been determined; one of the most famous designs comes from the Italian Cino Zucchi, who u. a. proposing the construction of several tall office towers - locally referred to as “skyscrapers”. An underground station for the future second line of the Helsinki Metro is also planned.
