Kaartinkaupunki ( Swedish. Gardesstaden ) is a sub-area ( Finnish. Osa-alue ) and a district ( kaupunginosa ) in the center of the Finnish capital Helsinki .

Translated, Kaartinkaupunki means something like "Guard City". The heart of the district is the Kasarmitori ("barracks square"). The name of this square - and indirectly for the entire district - was the barracks on its south side, built in the 1820s according to plans by Carl Ludwig Engel . Originally it served the Helsinki garrison, today it houses the Finnish Ministry of Defense. The Supreme Administrative Court of Finland is on the east side of the square and the Helsinki German Library is on the north side .

With the Esplanadi and the Kauppatori market square , some of Helsinki's most famous sights belong to Kaartinkaupunki. The district is also home to the Finnish Architecture Museum , the Finnish Design Museum and the German Church of Helsinki .

Otherwise, there are primarily offices and other workplaces in Kaartinkaupunki; There are only a few hundred inhabitants.
