Lauttasaari ( Swedish Drumsö ) is an island in Helsinki with an area of 3.75 km², about three kilometers west of the city center. In the official city structure, it represents a separate district (kaupunginosa) , divided into the sub-areas ( osa-alue ) Kotkavuori, Vattuniemi, Myllykallio and Koivusaari. The latter consists of a neighboring island to the west.
Lauttasaari is mainly residential area with 19,000 inhabitants. Despite its proximity to the city center, Lauttasaari also has some forest and protruding rocks.
The Länsiväylä motorway runs across the island and connects Helsinki with Espoo as 51 .
Lauttasaari was a local recreation area until the Helsinki bridge was built in 1935. From then on, building activity began. First an industrial area was created, later numerous industrial plants were demolished and replaced by apartment blocks.
The Lauttasaari and Koivusaari stations of the Helsinki Metro on the route to Espoo have been in operation since 2017.
