Katajanokanluoto ( Swedish Skatakobben ) is a small inhabited Finnish island in the Gulf of Finland between the capital Helsinki and the Suomenlinna archipelago . On the island there is a wooden house as a residential building, a stationary navigation signal, jetties and a flagpole on which the Finnish flag is hoisted on flag days. The island is supplied with electricity via a submarine cable .

Katajanokanluoto is about 95 meters long (in the southeast-northwest extension) and 65 meters wide. The island has been owned by Suomen Lohitukku Oy since 2001 ; originally there was a pilot station on it, but it was destroyed by fire.

etymology

The name Katajanokanluoto is made up of the Finnish words "Katajanokan" and "luoto", the former being the genitive for the name of the peninsula Katajanokka ( Swedish: Skatudden ), which is almost 500 m northwest, and luoto can be translated as "islet".

location

The island of Lonna is about 800 m to the south-southeast, Ryssänsaari is about 540 m to the west-southwest. The closest mainland is the Katajanokka Peninsula, which is also a district of Helsinki.

The city ferries operated by the Helsinki City Transport Authority transport around 1.6 million passengers to Suomenlinna every year, including many tourists. These ferries go right past Katajanokanluoto, which makes the island a popular photo object. The large ferries to Tallinn, Sweden and Russia, which moor in the south harbor (Eteläsatama) , also pass the island. You drive through between Katajanokanluoto and Ryssänsaari.

Flora and fauna

As a typical archipelago island , Katajanokanluoto consists of rock. The island is only sparsely overgrown, in addition to a few trees (mostly birch) only low shrubs, grass and moss can be found.
