Kaivopuisto ( Swedish. Brunnsparken ) is a park in the Finnish capital Helsinki . The surrounding district with almost 500 inhabitants is also called Kaivopuisto.

Park Kaivopuisto is located directly on the sea in the southeast of the peninsula on which downtown Helsinki is located. From the rocks of the park there is a view of the archipelago off the coast of Helsinki and the fortress island of Suomenlinna . On the highest point of Kaivopuisto is the observatory of the Finnish Astronomical Society Ursa , built in 1926 . Especially in summer, the green area is a popular place where Helsinkians spend their free time. At Vappu , on May 1st, many Helsinkians come to the park to have a picnic, in 2007 according to estimates by the police about a maximum of 50,000 at the same time. Every year on June 12, Helsinki Day, a free outdoor concert is held at Kaivopuisto.

The history of the Kaivopuisto began in the 1830s when a spa with an adjoining park was built on the then undeveloped tip of the peninsula . The name Kaivopuisto ("fountain park") also reminds of this . Because the Russian nobility were not allowed to travel abroad at the time, the spa in Helsinki, which was then part of Russia, became a popular travel destination for the upper class of Saint Petersburg . When the travel ban was lifted after the Crimean War , the bathroom lost its importance. In 1886 the area came into the possession of the City of Helsinki and was converted into a public park. The building of the old spa was destroyed in 1944 by the Soviet bombing during the Continuation War. Only the restaurant building of the bath was preserved and is still in operation today as the Kaivohuone restaurant.

The residential area Kaivopuisto borders the park and has around 500 inhabitants. Many embassies have settled in the exclusive residential area.
