Ullanlinna ( Swedish. Ulrikasborg ) is a sub-area ( Finnish. Osa-alue ) and a district ( kaupunginosa ) with about 10,000 inhabitants of the Finnish capital Helsinki . It is located between the sub-areas / districts of Eira and Kaivopuisto at the southern end of the peninsula on which the center of Helsinki is located. All three areas are among the most prestigious and expensive residential areas in the city. In addition to the sub-area Ullanlinna and the district Ullanlinna, whose boundaries are congruent, there is also an urban district ( peruspiiri ) of the same name, which includes the sub-areas Ullanlinna, Eira, Kaivopuisto, Punavuori , Kaartinkaupunki , Suomenlinna , Munkkisaari and Länsisaaret and thus to approx Inhabitant comes.

The name Ullanlinna, which one could translate into German as “Ulrikenburg”, goes back to unrealized fortification plans from the 18th century. At that time, the island fortress Suomenlinna was built off the coast of Helsinki , and some fortifications were also to be built on the mainland to strengthen it. The name Ulrika or Ulla refers to the Swedish Queen Ulrike Eleonore (1688–1741).

Until the 19th century, the area was still outside the city. There were u. a. Vacation homes of wealthy Helsinki residents. In the late 19th century, the area was initially built with low wooden houses. Most of the current building fabric originates from the turn of the century and the early 20th century and can mostly be assigned to Art Nouveau . A second construction phase that was striking for today's cityscape was the 1960s. At that time, most of the - very few - remaining wooden houses were replaced by modern buildings.

The embassies of many countries are located in Ullanlinna. The building of the Russian embassy in Tehtaankatu is particularly representative. Other noteworthy buildings are the neo-Gothic St. John's Church ( Johanneksenkirkko , 1891), the St. Henry's Cathedral ( Pyhän Henrikin katedraali , the main cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in Finland , 1860) and the Eira hospital ( Eiran sairaala , planned by the architect Lars Sonck , 1905).

Ullanlinna also includes the Tähtitorninmäki, a small hill on which there is a park and an observatory planned by Carl Ludwig Engel . It is not to be confused with the Ullanlinnanmäki hill, which despite its name does not belong to the official Ullanlinna district, but to Kaivopuisto and also houses an old observatory.
