Robert de Visée

Robert de Visée (* around 1656/1660, † 1732 in Paris ) was a French lutenist , guitarist , theorbist , viola player , singer and composer at the court of Louis XIV .

Life

The origin of Robert de Visée is not known; his last name suggests Portuguese roots. Around 1680 he came to the court of Louis XIV as a chamber musician , where the guitar stood in high favor as an accompanying instrument for courtly dance and new playing techniques were developed.

In 1682 Robert de Visée published his first book of compositions for guitar Livre de Guitare, dedié au Roy . He also dedicated the Livre de pièces pour la guitare , published in 1686, to the king, who let him play him every evening. He also composed many pieces for theorbo and lute. Most of it is preserved in the Saizenay manuscript from 1699.

Louis XIV commissioned de Visée as a guitar teacher for the Dauphin . The official title "Royal Guitar Teacher", however, was reserved for the Spanish guitarist Jourdan de la Salle . In 1695 de Visée became "royal guitar player" and in 1709 a singer in the royal chamber choir. In 1716 he published "Pièces de Theorbe et de luth mises en Partition Dessus et Baße", a collection of arrangements of his theorbo and lute compositions for upper voice and figured bass. In the foreword he gives information about the usual performance practice, namely with viola da gamba, violin and harpsichord. After the death of Jourdan de la Salle in 1719, de Visée was his successor as "Royal Guitar Teacher" with a salary of 1200 livres , which he received later. He gave up this office in 1721 after the death of his wife. His name is mentioned in courtly records until his resignation as a guitar player in 1732. It is believed that he died soon after.
