history
Archaeological excavations show that the area was settled for the first time after the Ice Age , 9,000 years ago. Prehistoric finds also show that the settlement has hardly been interrupted since then. The founding of the village , which was mainly based on agriculture , dates from the Middle Ages , although the beginning of agriculture in this area has not yet been fully established. With the construction of the railway line from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna by the Finnish railway VR-Yhtymä and especially after the inauguration of the Helsinki - Saint Petersburg line in 1870, the name of the city of Riihimäki became more popular.
To secure the railway line as part of the defense line through southern Finland, the Russian government built a garrison in Riihimäki in 1910 . In 1919, Riihimäki was a densely populated municipality with its own administration and local autonomy, with the right to appoint officials and committees.
In 1922, Riihimäki was made a town and on January 1, 1960, it was granted city rights . Development of the population (as of December 31) :

The coat of arms of Riihimäki
The coat of arms is divided in half by a golden belt. The silver upper half shows seven red flames rising upwards, with the lower half representing a golden grain of wheat. The coat of arms reflects the origin of the city name; riihi - mäki = (threshing hill). Mayor in 2004 is Seppo Keskiruokanen.

In addition to its function as a railway junction with a marshalling yard , the city is known for its traditional glass production . The tradition of earlier glasswork continues today as a skillful handicraft , i.e. H. the glass is hand-blown in small workshops and studios. The Finnish Glass Museum documents and preserves the 4,000-year-old history of glass blowing. In the 19th century, the cityscape was characterized by large industrial buildings, such as B. the Paloheimo Saha sawmill, the Riihimae Lasi glass factory and the Sako weapon factory.
