Jaana Sundberg (born April 2, 1983 in Riihimäki ) is a former Finnish judoka . She won two Grand Slam tournaments in 2013.

Athletic career

Jaana Sundberg fought internationally mostly in the half light weight, the weight class up to 52 kilograms. In 2003 she was third in the World Military Games in Catania. At the European Championships in Rotterdam in 2005, she lost in the quarterfinals to the Portuguese Telma Monteiro . After two wins in the hopes, she fought against the Slovenian Petra Nareks for a bronze medal and finished fifth after her defeat. At the U23 European Championships she also lost to Telma Monteiro, but then won the battle for bronze against Marie Muller from Luxembourg.

In 2008 Sundberg reached seventh place at the European Championships in Lisbon . The following year, she reached the semi-finals at the 2009 European Championships in Tbilisi. After losing to the Russian Natalja Kusjutina and the Dutch Kitty Bravik , she finished fifth like in 2005. In 2010 Sundberg won a Grand Prix tournament for the first time in Rotterdam. In 2011, she lost at the European Championships in Istanbul in the quarter-finals against the Frenchwoman Penelope Bonna . After beating Marie Muller in the Hope Round, Sundberg lost the battle for bronze against Brit Sophie Cox . Three months later, Sundberg won a bronze medal at the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2012 she finished seventh at the European Championships in Chelyabinsk . At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 Sundberg retired in their opening match against Majlinda Kelmendi, who competed for Albania, after 4:55 minutes.

In May 2013, Jaana Sundberg defeated the Mongolian Adiyaasambuugiin Tsolmon in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Baku . In July 2013, she won a bronze medal at the World Military Championships. Two weeks later, she won the Grand Slam tournament in Moscow with a final victory over the Brazilian Érika Miranda . At the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, the two met again in the quarter-finals, this time Miranda won. After beating Marie Muller in the Hope Round, Sundberg lost to the Japanese Yuki Hashimoto in the battle for bronze . At the beginning of 2014 Sundberg reached the third Grand Slam final within a year at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris , this time she lost to Majlinda Kelmendi. In 2015 she was eliminated from the European Games in Baku in her first fight against Larisa Florian from Azerbaijan. Sundberg was still active until the end of 2016. At the European Championships in 2016 , she finished seventh. At the end of 2016 she won bronze again at the military world championships.

Sundberg won eleven Finnish championship titles:

  • Half light weight: 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
  • Lightweight: 2003, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013
